What is the fascination with being unique? Yet, the lipstick, the piercings, the outfits, the crowded night spots, and the vocabulary are all the same. On another level, realize that you are using the same materials as everyone else. The tattoos, the jewelry, purses, gear, cars, and travel are your currency of difference. But, let us talk about the core of the matter. You want to be separate and special. I argue that your goal requires a more creative approach. Begin with YOU.
One of a Kind
You may not be the only person on earth, but you can be the only, the original, the one YOU. But, you seem focused on what KIND of you to be. Listen to me.
The pinnacle of individuality is to refuse to define YOU in comparison with others, limited by their perspective. Originality is to realize the inherent uniqueness of your purpose in the place where you are. Uniqueness is to act on each opportunity you are given to impact your immediate and larger world.
Originality has little to do with your clothing or your car. It hinges upon how your inward emotional center and mental health is represented outwardly. As simple as a smile, as quiet as a random act of kindness, or as boisterous as an act of heroism, who you are is your impact.
Realize the relative ease of standing out in your social settings. Now, assess your comfort with being weird, different, or abnormal. Health is to operate with purpose, consonant both in thoughts and actions. Illness is to boast of “don’t care” in the midst of conformity or to pile on the cultural cliches through dress, vocabulary, and location. Health is more rare.
What is Really Unique Today
Following is a list of realities I do not see a lot of today. If you really want to be unique, consider adding a number of these to your expression of self. You will find greater peace, purpose, and personal insight as you experience and enjoy to company of YOU.
1. Never Bored
The boredom lament has gotten out of hand. If you want to be different, recognize down time as reflective time. Balance the need to work, play, hustle, and rest toward sustainable achievement of your goals.
2. A Routine Outside Work/School
I am always surprised to find that people do not have a concept of ordering their time outside the confines of what others are making them do. If you want to be special, be more intentional with your time. Do not sleep up until time to get ready to go. Wake in the morning with time to spare. Stretch and take a walk. Read the newspaper. Take time to do something you want before having to engage in the directives of others.
3. Writing That Novel
I often hear the phrase, “I could write a book.” The problem is, you never sit down and put time into writing it. If you want to be different, be that person that actually created an outline, organized chapters, put some words on paper, and submitted that novel to a publisher. You will be in rarified air with that move.
4. Meditating in Silence
If you want to be on another level than others around you, learn to use your awareness intentionally. Few people can control what they allow into their consciousness. Meditate to manage the inputs you allow, direct your energy, and influence your environment.
5. Learning for Fun
Increasing your competence will put you in a league of your own. Deepen your understanding about the activities, interests, and opportunities available to you. Your effort will result in a higher capacity to engineer change in your life. You will be more interesting as you increase your knowledge.
6. Completing that Business Plan
Everyone seems to have an idea that was stolen by another faster individual or a large corporation. If you want to rise above the trend, you must structure your business model, organize your board, and project your revenues. Put those ideas down on paper. Share them with a group of confidants. Crowd source funding, and build something the world has not seen before.
7. Delivering that Workshop
You could do that! You have been a part of the crowd long enough. It is time for you to be up front as the presenter. In that moment, you will see just how special you are. You will see a distinct difference between those that sit in the chairs waiting to hear, and you who stands ready to speak.
8. Health, Beauty, AND Simplicity
In your quest to be different, you missed the imperative to be YOUR BEST. In many ways, by definition, you have lost your mental health—that sense of well-being and self-satisfaction that results from intentional living and goal achievement. Your recovery begins when you get back to the basics. Peace, air, water, and sunlight begin the list. Nutrition, hygiene, exercise, and relationships are the second wave. Forethought, intentionality, self-reactiveness, and self-reflectiveness round out the trifecta. Anything else is extra and ornamental. Make sure that anything you add is an honest and enhancing addition. Do not add in order to approximate or appear to be healthy focusing on outward show without inward consciousness. This may have been your behavior before, but now is your time to return to simplicity.
